    Angry Sewing machine help

I had Preachermans Wife sew me some stuff, but I bought some silk and was trying to make a liner today. But I am having sewing machine problems that are driving me crazy. My machine won't pick up the bobbin thread. I have a Japanese made Royal Supreme 35, if that means anything to any of you. Anybody got anything they can tell me to try??????

Sounds like the bobbin is not in correctly. Make sure it is not in backward and coming out of the bobbin case correctly.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

OK, I dont know much about sewing machines......

All I know is I got this thing off Freecycle and it has worked for two other projects. What should I be looking for?

Have you changed anything since the last time it worked?

Does the bobbin lay on its side or is it vertical?

Is it inside of a metal circular bobbin case?

Is there enough thread in the bobbin?

When you manually move the needle with the hand crank wheel, does it catch the bobbin thread that way?

Have you used the machine before? Has it worked okay in the past?

The easiest thing to do first is try changing you brand of thread and needle and see if the problem persists. The brand of thread and needle that you use can make a HUGE difference in the way the machine operates.

Good call. 100% poly guttenman thread works great for me.

OK, I have sewn two projects with this machine, using this thread and this bobbin. I did change needles because one got broken somehow. But I took the broken end to Wal-mart with me. That end had the name and size on it and I purchased the exact same needles. I am using the same thread, 100% poly black. The bobbin is PLENTY full of the same thread. The bobbin is metal, it is inside a metal case and it is vertical. That is the circle created by the bobbin in perpendicular to the floor. I cannot catch the bobbin manually or mechanically. The needle is going down through the bobbin hole in the machine absolutely centered.

How much thread should I pull up through the hole on the bobbin case? How should I position that thread when putting it back in the bobbin case? I think I may have just got lucky when I got it to work before. I don't know, but I have sewn with it before for sure, and it worked pretty darned good!

While recently working on my quilt, I ran out of the Gutterman thread I was using and switched to some Mettler thread in the same color. To look at the 2 threads side by side, they looked the same, both high quality. I bought the Mettler from Hancock fabrics and paid more for it than I did the Gutterman. I tried in vain to use the Mettler, readjusting the tension on both the bottom and top threads, but I still had constant bird's nest and thread breakage. It took me 2 days before I could get back out and get some more Gutterman, but once I started using it again all my problems disappeared.

I have had similar problems with needles before. Singer needles work great in my machine but other brands will break the thread, not catch the bottom thread, and I had needles constantly breaking.

You may also check and see if the thread is unwinding from the bobbin in the right direction, counter-clockwise I think. You may need a smaller needle if you are working with silk. What were you sewing when it worked?

Oh yeah, since you mentioned it, the needles are Singer brand and the thread is Sulky Branded. 100% poly
