What is the answer you are looking for?
    1. Yes
    2. Looks right
    3. no
The footbox on a hammock as shown using the inserted triangle is intended to make the foot side tighter. The tighter material is what creates the footbox. I maybe incorrect, I have not played with footbox hammocks in some time.

Below a pic of both versions to explain my questions.

    Please explain to me:
    1. Left side, parallelogram, like a previous poster mentioned, if you remove from both sides the same amount, or one slightly more then the other, it still does not make up for the missing 17" missing (minus 2x30 = 60, plus 43).
Does it mean head side should indeed be longer ?

    2. Right side, trapezoid, also suggested by some posters, if from 1 side only 20 + 20" are removed, you have a minus of 40". If you do the triangle thing again on the other side, you are only 17" short (130 total length, minus 60, plus 43).
That would mean the head side is 23" shorter then the foot side...

    3. If I shorten with the given triangle the footside 17", should I not remove from the head side in total 17" as well ? Not calculating the hems etc.
In that case both sides would be equal again.

Dabberty: I have been hiking and traveling since Oct 5 hence no response.

Your right drawing is close to the finished product.
If you sew a triangle (2, 30 inch sides) you have shortened that side of that hammock by 60 inches and only replaced the total length with 43. You can vary the triangle and not use 30 inch, but that what I used, whatever you choose will determine the length of the 3rd side, if you do an equilateral triangle.

I recommend not sewing the head end, but do a sheet bend and vary the shoulder side length until you get the lay right. Cut and hem when you are happy with the lay, if it is to loose you tend to fall out the shoulder side and even a knotty mod wont help, if to short it becomes a deep tub that you have trouble getting out of.

There were really no specific calculations, just observations on what happens when you shorten one side 17 or so inches and replace it with another piece of material

    Any update in 6-1/2 years?
I want to make a parallelogram shape, with a Knotty Mod where the offset would make a saggy side.
The angle of the slant causes the perfect-natural-flat-lay (90 degrees off axis) to shift by the same amount. This in turn should really improve the diagonal-lay we all use.
Has anyone else worked on the parallelogram idea? I can't quite follow the drawing and instructions at the top of this thread.
What I think I understand about a parallelogram shape, and demonstrated last night with my TV remote control in a plastic mock up, is that head and foot should be opposite to what's shown in the photos. (Shouldn't they be towards the pointy sides?)
My mock-up, cut out of a cheap plastic store bag is that this lay is flat, the other direction doesn't work at all.
I'm of a mind to just make a quick simple single layer hammock to try.
