I think I see what is going on. You sew 60" of the top hem from the main hammock body to the two 30" sides of the triangle. The 3" radius at the corner makes for a smoother transition as you sew a straight line to the two different sides of the addition. The long side of the triangle then becomes part of the hammock edge, and the extra length from the triangle sides becomes the sag for the foot box.
Very clever. I think I will have to try this one. Would adding a smaller triangle on the head side make for almost no shoulder squeeze, or would you then be in an inverted banana?

Fantastic!
What a great post and an even better bit of DIY.

Another way to do the radius corner to 3" if you don't have the tubing. Grab a ruler and place it where it is 3" across. Mark it at 1.5", and set your compass to 1.5". Then use your compass to make the semi circle. If you don't have a compass, measure up 1.5" from your first mark and draw two arcs.
I really like this plan but I'm wondering if it needs adjusted for height. I suppose a long term test is required. If you don't mind could I ask how tall you are? Then I could adjust accordingly if I decide to try this design. It looks very promising.
I think that I shall never see
A poem as lovely as a tree.... Joyce Kilmer "Trees"
I am 5'8" tall and weigh 180. A bit wide in the shoulders, with about a 35 inch waist.
I am working on a second one, from 1.7 now, for my wife, she is 5'4" tall. The ridgeline, between knots ended up at 6 foot, with 116 inch start to the cloth, using 6 inches for a double fold channel at each end.
Since doing the second one I would extend the footbox side to 120 inches from 116. I would also, on the head end, only have a 7 inch extension on the left side. There is a bit to much of sag on the left side for my tastes.
The other reason for less length on the left side is to match a zipper to the side for a bugnet, and not have puckers, it needs to be shorter. She won't do the open type bugnet
If you use the Hug bugnet, setting both sides to the same length with the Zing It line fixes that problem but the side gathers some.
