Bump for an old thread. Are The thoughts still the same on this topic? I think a like or thanked button would be nice.
We all know of the original "Walk off the war" thru-hike - but, check out these guys, they're helping folks 'walk off the war' today -

See, I used to think it was non-contributing. But, I belong on another outdoor forum, and its actually quite nice. You can simply let someone know that the information they posted was useful, without having to actually contribute to the thread. And, sometimes, you just want to say "thank you" to someone in a thread-such as someone who comes up with a clever alternative to what the OP started (as a for instance). No need to come up with a post, as it isnt contributing. But, its nice to know that your idea, thought, whatever, is appreciated. Anyway, thats my $0.02
Now I don't want to step on any toes and I mean no disrespect but after reading this thread I have a feeling most that are against have not used a forum with a like/thanks button.
This is the best behaved forum I've ever been on and I love it. I would not want to take anything from that but I don't feel like adding that would take anything away from the quality of forum.
This is just my opinion and I'm not arguing just debating.
I've been an active member on many forums, both with and without like(/dislike) buttons. While it does give you the ability to simply click to inform the poster that you agree with their thoughts, I for one prefer the feedback of a post.
I'm more than a bit of a gamer and many of the forums I spend time on are of the gaming variety and all of them have some version of the like/dislike button. Sometimes it's useful, but often times it just becomes a way that people will troll each other. And I wouldn't want to encourage that sort of behavior here, even in a passive manner.
The interaction and discussion are what make this forum such a great place. And because of that interaction we, even if only subconciously, remember that there are real people here who deserve our respect if for no other reason than that they are human beings.
Some of the gaming forums I frequent never show any form of respect and it really is just a free for all troll fest most days.

Yeah...no need for a popularity contest here. I'd rather see more strong ideas posted than folks trolling for self-esteem points, seeing how much agreeable stuff they can post to collect the most "thanks."
Great idea for some forums...just not quite the right fit for this one.

Additionally, if you think a post was particularly useful, you can always say so in the thread. It's so much better than clicking on a generic button without giving any reason explaining why or how the post was useful to you, and this would add value to the conversation. "Old School".
