Wool blanket for UQ???

Would a wool blanket make an ok UQ for mild temps like 45-50 degree range?

I have used a wool blanket between the layers of my wbbb. 27 degrees no problem while using sleeping bag.

I don't think it would be. One of the problems would be just getting it to hug the bottom of the hammock because any wool blanket that would be somewhat wind proof and warm enough would also be heavy. It would be easier to hang part of an old down sleeping bag you could get at a thrift or second hand store or if you haven't already dome it use a ccf pad or two in the hammock.

===> Yep! That is exactly what I used at the last hang! the trick was to put GripClips on the ends as tie-outs, and fold the corners in to shape it to the hammock. worked perfectly. I have another blanket now from LL Bean that has one side made of a water/weatherproof material, and the other is wool fleece.

Just ordered a WBBB from Brandon, and will try just the CCF. Will also be getting a proper UQ and TQ shortly, as well. While it is fun to do DIY, in the long run having the proper equipment is important to me.

But it CAN be done! I think there is a pic in my gallery of the GripClip on the wool blanket DIY UQ.

Ive done that and it works perfect. The weight of wool blankets keeps me from doing it while backpacking but it works great while car camping.

The great thing about wool is this : it retains heat when wet and doesnt burn easily.

The bad things : it is heck to hump and when wet is even heavier.

I had a fellow use one on a hang by putting inside the hammock with him , he said it worked but we heard him shivering and constantly readjusting his body .
It would do alot better outside than in....in my humble opinion.

I used a quality wool blanket from Pendelton and doubled it up so it would fit in the hammock. This blanket was very stiff and would not compress, even with me laying on it. It worked well as an insulator, but wasn't very comfortable. The odd shape of the A-sym made the blanket bunch up in areas so that it was effectively a lumpy mattress and it slid around every time I moved since the hammock fabric was so slick. I say, try it, though! It may just work for you better than it did for me. I liked it better than closed cell foam pads inside my hammock even if the blanket did weigh more.

When I first learned to make whoopies I was whoopie-ing everything.
For my deck hammock (ENO double) I made a gathered end under hammock/quilt from a wool blanket.
I connected the under quilt whoopies at the ENO gathered ends.
It works pretty good on chilly days / evenings.
