    Titanium Rings

For anyone that is interested, I ran across a source for load-rated titanium rings: Titan Marine Hardware

I remember that there was some previous discussion here on the forum about Ti components, so I thought I'd share the info.

For a non-hammock related project I recently purchased a fixed-bail Ti snap shackle from the linked vendor, and they provided a top quality product with fast shipping. If anyone needs Ti hardware, they seem to be a good source.

    Ti Rings

    thanks for the link.
Looking at the specs my memory was tickled to think that the aluminum SMC rings I use are larger, lighter, and stronger. And way cheaper.

Here's a link to a place selling the SMC rings for $2.50 each before shipping.

The SMC site lists the strength in terms of 3 sigmas from something , not sure what the units are so I'd hesitate to do a direct comparison of strength. Both the Ti and SMC rings are strong enough for hammocking, so issues of size, weight (the Ti Rings are 0.1 oz heavier by listing), and cost would dominate.

Yep, it's really hard to argue with the cost difference for hammocking use. Still, I'm glad to know that someone makes a Ti option for such a niche and specialized product.

Griz, thanks for the link, I stocked up on rings this morning.

Sunday morning, after the Nashville area dinner, Shiloh and Peanut came over to my place so I could wax eloquent about the ring buckles, demonstrating them on the posts of my front deck (it had been raining and was wet in the yard). Then, I couldn't find any, even on the SMC site. Granted, I was a bit distracted with folks in the house, but still, I was concerned. Now I'll have enough for 4 more hammocks

I got all excited about Ti rings until I saw the price. Yikes!

    Thanks AngrySparrow.

Like Grizz I find it very interesting that the SMC descending rings I use on the tree huggers are $2.50, weigh 0.4 oz compared to the 1.1 oz comparable sized Ti ring and are
    3,147 lbf - 14kN (3 Sigma)
    compared to the
    Max. Safe Load: 9,702 lbs.
Rec. Safe Working Load: 4,851 lbs.
    for the Ti.

Good to know that Ti isn't always the better choice.

My girl friend believes that the Ti are used for the marine application because the Ti doesn't react with anything and so corrosion wouldn't be a problem there using the Ti. She says that AL would be a problem for marine use because of corrosion so they would be willing to pay the price.

I am by no means an expert or a climber, but if I remember right I think that climbing gear has rating based on forces and directions. I think the 3 sigma refers to the sum of all the forces in the 3 linear directions.

I started a thread somewhere that gave the conversion of kN (kilo-Newtons) to foot pounds of force. It basically came it something rediculous that the tree would snap before the rings.

The engineer thinks of it as movement in the x,y, and z direction. Look at your PC. Think movement left and right (x), up and down (y), and into the screen and towards you (z).
