    Any Summer Tips?

This may sound like a real noob question, but while I plan for Summer camping what are the big secrets I should keep in mind?

For example, I assume CBS is actually a good thing, but does it actually mean exposure to the hotter air as opposed to the cool ground?

Do you raise tarps to allow movement or leave them close to keep down direct sun?

    Looking forward to Summer camping!

    Zip-offs are a must
When it seems like the night will last forever
And there's nothing left to do but count the years
When the strings of my heart start to sever
And stones fall from my eyes instead of tears
I will walk alone by the black muddy river
And dream me a dream of my own

Even in summer, your butt/back can still get cold at night without some kind of insulation so have some kind of insulation with you. That's what I have found anyways.

I would highly recommend a bug net. All the bug spray in the world won't keep bugs from landing on you and buzzing around your ears and nose while you try to sleep. I also use an underquilt in the summer. I usually pull it out from under me until I need it, same with a top quilt -- put it to the side until needed. Summer nights can still get cool. A small fan also helps when you're just too hot to get comfortable. You won't need to run it very long.

    Great Insights

I've got a bug net (PorTec). I also think I'm gonna go to my WBBB DL. I assume the skeeters can't bite through both layers.

Maybe I'll add my Hennessey Underpad. In a pinch I can stuff the DL with clothes.

    Thanks for the advice folks!

As a survivor of hot, humid, mosquito-infested Alabama in August, here are my thoughts.

As the others have said, bug nets are best. I've survived a summer night with just a head bug net and long sleeves, but I wouldn't recommend it.

In summer months what I've found is I go to bed hot, then wake up at 2am a little chilly. Now I always keep something nearby to put under me when this happens.

Tarp positioning: Just depends. If I stay in one campsite all day, I find I change configurations at least once during the day. I usually leave the tarp in "porch mode" during the day and drop it down to "A-frame mode" at night.

    Good luck!

+1 on Permethrin. Bug net and cloths too. Used in proper dilution (10%) no harm to humans. Careful around pets until completely dry!

If you use a Tyveck sit or ground sheet, don't forget that too.

Pack and waterproof packliner? Why the heck not?

Buy in bulk from the farm store, and mix your own. Costs only a few bucks and you will have enough concentrate to treat an entire scout troop.

CBS kicks in for most people around 65*F, plus or minus a few degrees. A standard camping pad will get you through. An underquilt will get you through and generally be more comfy. Since you're in BC, I assume you WILL need something!

Tarp pitch is something I play with a lot. Usually it's high, to allow airflow, or even even with half of the tarp flipped back over the ridgeline. That way I can see the stars, but have fast coverage if a shower moves in.

Permethrin is required, as far as I'm concerned. I also use a swatch of bug netting, but have never gone with the whole zippered bugnet thing. HYOH, and have fun!
