Prussik in place of a Whoopie?

I was playing with my 5th hammock and don't have whoopies for it but I have a lot of amsteel. Then it dawned on me I could simply add prussiks to either end of my suspension lines and it would act as a whoopie (adjustable loop). It seems so simple I am wondering why I haven't heard about it before. Is this safe?

It sounds workable, but with that kind of loading, you may have to fiddle with the prussik to loosen it enough to slide. Of course they are easy to loosen when needed.

On a HH or what? If it's a HH, I don't see why not. I think the Amsteel would slip, not only because it's slick but because it's about the same size as the stock suspension lines. I thought of doing something similar. I had whoopie slings and tree huggers but didn't like toggles all that much so I made a 8" CL with 7/64" and put a prussic on the tree huggers. This way I could hook my Dutch Biner to that prussic instead the webbing. It's difficult to deal with webbing and Dutch Biners, for me anyway. I now have Elephant Trunks and they work great. I never did try prussics on the huggers, though. Could work, who knows.

If you have lots of amsteel then why don't you make some whoopies? They are super easy. I like your thinking outside the box though. Never know unless you try.

Using prussics has been tried by a few people. The results to date:

The rule of the prussic cord being half the diameter of the main line rope holds. That pretty much means that you have to use 1/4" diameter rope to wrap the prussic around. 1/4" diameter rope is pretty heavy compared to the 1/8" or 7/64" or 2 mm Dynaglide being used for whoopie slings suspensions.

But give it try and maybe you will find another way to make it work.

I decided to give it a try. Sorry...no video.

I used 7/64" amsteel blue as the line and prussik. I made a 10" loop by tying with a fisherman's knot which you see on top of the prussik knot.

I did a fair amount of bouncing around and it held fine. I wouldn't hesitate to sleep on it. You DO want to make sure the prussik is snugged up REAL well before you put your weight on it.

As I suspected, the prussik doubles up with weight and there was no way I could adjust it without struggling to loosen it up first. I don't even want to think about doing it with cold wet fingers.

I declare King Whoopie to be safe.

The photos are before and after weighting the 3 wrap prussik.

I have this nervous feeling this might turn out bad?

But it seems to me slippage is no problem because even with just a few turns the line gets "bitten" and stops cold. I'd hook it over a toggle likely. Added bonus, no whoopie line hangin' down.

I might not get out to hang till this weekend and I'm not too good with a VC, but I'll give it a go.

I think I'll up my insurance rider while I'm at it.
