    Sizing for Bishop Bag

I should hopefully finish the bug net for my hammock tonight, so my next project is a Bishop bag for the hammock. I'm also planning on making an IX underquilt, but I think that I understand that it will need to be rolled and folded, and therefore need to be stored separately from the hammock. Is that correct? How do I figure how big to make my bishop bag?

Wad up your hammock and wrap it with a piece of fabric. Mark the spots where you want the seams and mark the length, then go to town.

I'll often stuff the project into a gallon zip-loc bag and remove much of the air before measuring for the stuff sack.

For my DIY HH style hammocks I make a double ended stuff sack out of fabric that is rough dimensioned 23" wide x 16" long. This creates a double stuff sack about 7" in diameter and about 13" long with draw string channels at both ends. If you don't want the bag to open at both ends and to be more of a true Black bishop bag cinch one end down and tie off instead of having a draw string.

Here's a similar one (but shorter, I started with 22" x 12" because it was a single layer gathered end with no netting):

The original Blackbishop bags had a 10" or so (give or take) circular bottom at the end with a strongly reinforced hole on one side at the seam for the suspension to go through, had a mesh pocket on that end, and were maybe 18" to 20" long (give or take) and made of silnylon. They were closed by a drawstring at the other end. Named after Blackbishop351, a member here who no longer posts.

I really like the idea of a double ended bag because my hammock is usually the first thing stuffed into it, then my tarp.

With a double ended one, if I only want to hang my hammock, I can open that end, if I need my tarp set up first, I can open the other end.

Thanks alot! I know what my next DIY project is...

Since the double ended bags I use (basically like what comes with a WBBB) are just a tube with draw strings at each end I am not sure they would work to store your hammock and tarp together, but I may not be understanding your idea. FWIW I would tend to want my tarp and hammock separated since the tarp is often wet from dew or rain and I like to store it outside in the mesh pockets on my pack to keep my other gear dry.

For my use the double ended stuff sack lets you attach either end of the hammock to trees just like a blackbishops bag. The difference is both ends open and allow you to stuff the bag from either direction.
