    noseeum and ripstop sock discussion

We were discussing the pros and cons of different hammock sock / bugnetting sock combinations, and instead of hijacking another thread about it, we should move it to its own.

My thought was to borrow hammock engineer's idea to make a 1/2 noseeum, 1/2 ripstop nylon hammock sock, and then flip it over based on the season. I'm willing to make one to try the idea out, after I finish a few other ongoing projects (3 hammocks, one quilt in progress).

I had a similar thought. My idea was to make a hammock sock, then cut out a 5'wx3'h hole on both sides and sew in noseeum. Also on the inside add some DWR ripstop with velcro around the noseeum windows, this would be to close it in cold weather and to open both sides for air flow in warmer weather. Haven't actually drawn this idea out to see what it looks like, but it was athought that came to mind reading all the post about hammock sock and bugnets. Instead of having both just make it an all-in-one.

That's an interesting idea. I think it would get too warm in the Summer. I've had days where I thought just plain noseeum was holding in too much heat. For Spring or Fall I could see that working better.

yeah I haven't thought of that. I have never used no-seeum. I was just thinking in the same mind set as a (forgive me for saying it)tent. the two windows directly across from each other would allow for air flow.

That's true. There was a picture somewhere in the gallery where someone put in clear plastic window in their cover. Pretty interesting. I'll see if I can find it. Here it is.

Gotta love all the different ideas.

Just a thought what if the windows were a little larger. The only reason I thought 3x5 is One of the local outfitters has no-seeum in 36" width. I come up with these ideas, but not enough cash flow to make it happen.

I still think may be too warm for some of Spring, most of Summer, and some of Fall (at least down South). But maybe a diagram or some picture would help. Or make a couple of versions of it, with bigger and smaller windows... noseeum can also be found at the usual places: (Quest Outfitters, Thruhiker.com, etc.)

Not saying don't build it (go for it, try it out!), I'm just sayin'...

    Yeah, that looks cool.

Would you be able to climb in or out the noseeum windows, or would they be completely sewn on? You could make an entry point at the bottoms of the windows (velcro'd or zippered shut?), to grab things from outside or climb out to "water the bushes", etc. Cool.

yeah that's good idea. Instead of putting velcro on the top make an entry at bottom of the netting. Like I said right now this is just one big crazy thought in my mind. I probably need to sit down and draw it out on paper for me to get all the ideas down on paper and out of my head so I can actually figure out the details.
