Green Ridge State Forest April 2011

Went for a day hike/gear test at Green Ridge State Forest. We've had a lot of rain lately, and I thought the Northern trail wouldn't be so bad. I knew the Southern area would have me walking through lots of cold water. Well, the Northern area wasn't much better. But I still had a great time. I went from the visitors center to the PA border/Mason Dixon Line and back. It's about a 12 mile loop.

The day started off in the mid-40's and slightly overcast. I was hoping for some sunshine to take good pictures and video with. As the day progressed I saw the sun more and more. Then temps rose into the 60's too, which was nice after crossing the creeks many times.

I had lunch at a back country shelter. Tried out my new Brasslite Turbo I-D alcohol stove. Worked awesome. I had a hot cup of tea with 1/2 oz of fuel. Nice quiet spot too.

I noted a spot on my way out that would be great to set up my new WB Traveler hammock and new Zpacks cuben tarp. Amazing how light and simple to set up this was. I took a short nap, then headed back to the car. It was a great day in the woods for sure!

Really liked your video. I liked that you spent most the video time showing where you were hiking, napping etc. Beautiful area. I like the open woods/low underbrush like that,,,easy to hike around, something not easily found in my neck of the woods.
I'm curious, do you think the Cuban tarp will diffuse the sunlight during the warm weather ??,,,,seems fairly transparent.
    Thanks for sharing

this was my first set up with the cuben tarp. I'm unsure how it will do with the summer months ahead and sunlight. Generally, as I'm under the canopy tied to trees, I don't expect to notice. Once the leaves come out, I'll be pretty well shaded. The tarp will protect from dew and rain, and falling insects or what not.

I was just goofin' around when I video'd up and through the tarp. I was amazed at how transparent cuben fiber is! I bet I make a funny silhouette to any animal approaching my site!!

Smile love the Green Ridge State Forest

I love Maryland's Green Ridge State Forest. The overlook behind the HQ off the highway is a nice, short stop when driving through. It's not as well known as other state DNR lands which is kind of a good thing. Some people on the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club's forum and the Midatlantichikes.com guy aren't that impressed with the GRSF.

This area of the Appalachian Ridge & Valley province is rain-shadowed and drier than the Alleghenies to the west. It'd be neat to see the cacti on the shale barrens. There are some nice, state West Virginia DNR and wildlife area tracts on the south side of the Potomac.

I tried to hike the whole 50 mile backpacker loop with the C&O Canal in 1991 but lost the trail about 10 miles in. The trail was overgrown with brambles and blowdowns. The trail was in much better shape in fall 2005 the last time I spent any significant time there. It's nice to see DNR spend time and money working on trails and upgrading other recreation facilities.

I've worked on the trails clearing, and re-blazing recently. There's a trail specialist on staff now who's doing a lot of work there and it's really starting to show.
