    Jordan Lake, NC

I'm going to be there Sat, May 14th. I know others were looking at a May 7th hang in Raleigh, but thought I'd send this out too. There will be a bunch of tent campers with families, and me, swinging in the breeze. Crosswinds campground, down 751.
It's better to be lucky, than good!

Sounds sweet, Ladybird. Wish I could join you. Jordan Lake looks really nice:

Have you "hung out" at Jordan Lake before? I'm planning to take a trip there soon and wondered how hammock-friendly they are. I've heard mixed things about NC State parks.

I'd be interested to know which ones you've heard those things about. The only North Carolina State Park that I've heard is difficult to hang in is Hammocks Beach State Park (ironic, huh?), and then only because there are no trees to speak of.

I haven't heard of any specific state park. I've been told by a fellow hammocker that NC State Park rules include something that would rule out hammock camping, probably something about tying to trees. I haven't found this rule to confirm it. I know that my friend makes a point of putting up his hammock as out of site as possible and as close to dark as possible, but I don't know if he's ever had a bad experience or if he's just being overly cautious.

But speaking of camping on the coast, do you know about other State Parks there? I'm planning a bike trip to and up the Outer Banks, and was trying to figure out if hammock camping was an option on the Outer Banks. Some stretches do seem pretty lacking in trees.

I hate to hijack this post though. Care to ask this question in the trip planning forum? That way we can get answers that will help others also searching for this info.

I can't speak for Jordan Lake, but hanging at Falls Lake is ok. The ranger I talked with knew all about hammocks and tree straps. Then again he was probably just happy I didn't have a chainsaw or axe.

I've not hung at Jordan Lake before, but I'm sure there will be at least 2 trees that are viable. I'll put in my .02 after the hang though.

    I will do that.

Good to hear, though, about positive hammock experiences in NC State Parks. I'm also planning an overnight trip to Jordan Lake, but, unfortunately, it looks like it won't be the same weekend as Ladybird and others.
