    Carabiners?

I have decided to remove my stock HH support ropes and replace them with straps. I am going to put carabiners on the end of the hammock so I can switch back to ropes easliy.

I'm not a climber for I don't have much experience in climbing gear so I need help choosing a carabiner, the smallest and lightest I can get away with and still be safe to use on the hammock support system.

Any advice size, shape, style, locking vs. non-locking, etc........

    Thanks

Doesn't need to be locking, and needs a safe working load around 600 lbs. That's about it - I'm pretty sure climbing websites list the working loads, and any climbing biner should hold several times that, I think.

Just be sure the biner shuts completely and all the force is in-line with the biner (i.e. it's not twisted against the tree).

How are you going to attach the biner to the hammock?

FWIW, that's rated at 26kN...well over 5500 lbs. 10kN closed is still over 1000 lbs. Should be fine.

I haven't decided yet. I am planning on using 7mm climbing rope that I have lying around which has like 1125lbs breaking strength. I have never taken the cover off the ends of my HH to see how the stock ropes are attached. I will decide once I get into it.

I want the biner to be as close to the end of the hammock as possible, ideally all you would see is the biner and the knot for the rope that attaches it to the hammock.

I also have and idea for a new strap system and I want to be able to quickly change supports while experimenting. I have also come to like straps a lot better than the stock HH ropes.

When you uncover the ends you will find one or two holes melted thru the folds. These are NOT structural! They are only guides for the whipping. Using your climbing rope and whipping it like the factory ropes will work fine, just don't depend on the holes in the fabric to support your weight, they will rip out.

Here's a quick sketch of the strap system I have been thinking about:

It's all still in my head, but the basic premis is that it works like this: The hammock strap has a rectangular metal ring and a round metal ring sew in at some point in the strap. You would wrap the webbing around the tree once or twice and then bring it back through the rectangular ring which is there to keep the straps centered to the hammock and then pass the strap through the metal ring and pull to tighten and then tie.

It's basically just a idea that came from a trucker's hitch knot.

Comment's or ideas (or express your total confusion)?

Sorta reminds me of the crazy creek setup. If you are taking up slack aftert wrapping around the tree, won't it be a pain to work the slack around the tree? If you leave one side of the strap loose (slack) it may slip around the tree during the night.

That thought had crossed my mind and I am thinking that I may not have to even wrap it around the tree. Just around the tree and back through the rings and tie. Either that or make sure you pull it as tight as possible before wrapping around the tree.

How about using some slpastraps instead. I think thew would be lighter then what you've got planned.
