    Snow in Red River Gorge

I was on my way back form a conference in Richmond,Ky Saturday (nothing more exciting than a group of mathematicians) and decided to head over to the gorge for an overnighter. First I hiked the Rough trail from Chimney top Rd over to Hansom's Point (Pinch'Em Tight ridge). The first first picture is the damage (fire?) along the ridge. It was a bit depressing to see:

But the views were great from out on the point. This was my first visit to Hanson's point, I'll have to go back when the sky is clear and I have a good camera with me.

Now for the required hammock pictures. I'm still testing a new lightweight bridge hammock I am still working on. If I decide I like it I will need to add suspension and a bug net. Its very narrow, but so far I like it.

This was my first time I've been out in the hammock in a snow. As you can see there wasn't much, but it was quite heavy and stuck to the tarp well. I knocked it off a couple times in the night. In the morning some of it was frozen to the tarp hems and stuck on quite solidly.

That night the low was supposed to be low 30's, but up on the ridges the snow wasn't melting at all. Down in the hollow (where I spent the nite) is was a few degrees colder - I could feel the difference as I climbed and descended. Its a good thing I had a warm jacket to supplement my 30 degree quilt.

All in all, it was a nice way to finish my weekend.

The gorge is always great - provided you stay away from the places that have been trashed. In the winter the views are so much better - in the summer you need to work to see what the canyon looks like.

Thanks, Mike. It was a beautiful little spot. It was also a cold spot down there by the stream - I'm just glad I had my winter Ptarmigan - uh Phoenix this time. We'll have to get you down to the gorge sometime. you'll love the hills.

Don, that looks like it was a very nice hike. Thanks for showing it off. I'll have to get out to Hanson's point this year before the crowds do....

Let's head out there again soon.

Sounds like a great idea. Might want to wait for the rain to slow a bit..
