    Cool Roll mats

In my HH scout i just use a regular roll mat that i got from a camping shop, however it can be difficult to get into the right position on top of it. I was wandering how to improve this and would be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks

    Hey Joe

Takes a little practice. Position it in the position you will be laying....that helps. A bit of squirming is always the case but it becomes second nature.

I found a single pad to be too narrow and also too long to be truly effective. I cut one into two 36" lengthe, place alongside each other, overlap to get a 36" wide "super" pad, make a couple of holes and thread with light line, Then you have a 36" wide torso pad. Covers from shoulders to hips, which is probably all that one needs for 3 season hanging. Unthread and roll together for transport. I find that in this form it more or less places itself in the hammock, spreads the hammock without needing to stake out the tie outs (HH Expedition) and is very comfortable. I use a 20 deg, synthetic bag as a top quilt, partly zipped to make a large foot and lower leg box. I get a small amount of condensation, but quite manageable. I should point out that I used to sleep fairly well in the hulls of offshore racing catamarans, which is like trying to sleep inside a jumping drum, so just about anything else is pretty comfortable.
