    splicing hollow core

check out these grip fids. They're quite easy to make if you can find hollow knitting needles. The medium is good for 7/64th amsteel, and the small one works on 3 mm amsteel. They are made for people crafting w/ yarn, but they sure work great for me.

If you are using 1/4" or larger amsteel, check out Selma Fids. You can buy them as a set , but you probably only need the smaller sizes.

I use a piece of phone wire. Insulated for 7/64. Strip the insulation off for Lash It. Works great for me.

I've used #18 for both dynaglide and 7/64" amsteel. You need to taper the end of the line to get it through the eye of the needle, but you should do that anyway to make a strong splice. You can use a fine file to smooth and dull the needle so it doesn't catch on individual fibers within the strands - makes it a "ball-point needle".
There is also a plastic needle that works. It looks like a child's toy (maybe it is).

However, my favorite splicing tool for amsteel is a "loop-turner" (Dritz #647). Splice your own splice.
This is the advise that I would follow! The man knows what he's talking about!

I haven't found anything easier to use than a 24" long piece of .035" stainless steel fishing leader wire folded in half and the bend closed down with pliers. Close the bend just enough to hold the size Amsteel you are using.

i use one of the 8 strands in a cat5. its single stranded 22ga(?) folded in half. The single strand makes it nicely rigid and the coating allows it to slide easily. I highly recommend it as its cheap, strong, and abundant.
    ...in it for pics.

I swiped a piece of floral wire from my wife's craft stash, scraped the green fuzzy stuff from it, bent it in half and used it just fine. It works great, the price was zero and I didn't have to drive anywhere to get it.

Lacking the ability to get a hold of any of the recommended "needles" above (stuck on a college campus) and being impatient, I went to the little convenience store on campus and bought a pack of plastic "Pick Up Sticks." (You know, the classic game!) This worked PERFECTLY for the 7/64th I have, but attaching the cord to the stick proved to be a challenge. I spliced the cable and tied an overhand knot around a loop of scotch tape that was taped to the stick. The hardest part was getting this knot through the inside. I used 4 strands for this overhand knot, but I think next time I will only use one strand, and taper my splice slowly up to having all 8 strands back.
