    Hello from California!

Hi everyone, stumbled upon hammocking recently (i wish I remembered where from...) and am jumping in! Snagged a DoubleNest, got my descender rings and straps, got an awesome deal on amsteel from opie and then orderered a tarp ridgeline and ASR from his website... going for a bugnet soon.

Are tarps necessary if it isn't going to rain? Hadn't seen anything on that but maybe it was covered in one of Shug's videos and I missed it.

going to thermarest/sleeping bag it until i'm sure this is the way to go for me. maybe an underquilt after if i love it. another question: when underquilt ratings are set, what clothing is assumed to be on the user? full thermals? shorts and a t-shirt?

thanks for all the really useful info, between the shug/grizz videos and ridiculously large amount of threads on this forum, i've never lacked night time reading material for the last few weeks!

gonna hit up yosemite for the first trip with my brother, so that if i'm dying i can just move into his tent

Hey..... no, a night tarp-less is terrific if there is no rain. Moon and stars abound.
Tarps are a great wind-block too in cooler weather....

Welcome Chorpie from a NorCal hanger, Sonoma County. You ever get up this way, bring some longer straps for our redwoods.

    Welcome to the forums.

    Hey Chorpie...welcome to the obsession.

First you will want an UQ...then a better tarp...then tarp tubes so your tarp can be easily rolled up to star gaze...then your sleeping bag will need to morph into a dedicated TQ...then...then...

The worst part is your friends and family will think you have turned into a hammock missionary.

Thanks guys. My friends already think something is wrong with me and i haven't even gone hammock camping yet, as much as i've been talking to them about it

i'm pretty stoked to try it out, especially since my backpacking tent weighs a little over 7 lbs and so far i think i'm quite a bit below that.

hoping my 12' straps will tide me over for a while, please let me know if that's too short (anyone that hits up Yosemite/King's Canyon/Sequoia is mostly where I end up)

Too bad the upper base camp at Mt. Whitney is all rocks, might have tried hanging there if i go with my buddy later this year

I'm a recent hammock convert as well. Regarding Whitney, you could probably hang if you slept at outpost camp, but you would need to get an earlier start.

I hang in the national parks all the time. Only thing that will mess you up are those alpine trees that only look like you can hang on them... 12' straps and whoopie slings will do you fine, even if you're hanging from the medium sized sugar pines (the large ones are just too big).

Hey from central Cali. North Cali folks call us southern, South Cali folks call us northern, but we're just out here in the middle.

@catalyst81 - outpost camp is definitely more scenic than the upper camp, for sure. maybe we'll try that. I don't even know if my friend won permits in the lottery yet, so that might affect things a bit

@lori - you know what's funny is that the "central coast" name covers a TON of area. When I was in Monterey County, they said central coast. Down here in Paso Robles/San Luis Obispo they say central coast, all the way down to ventura.

Who says there's not something wrong with THEM? Darn ground dwellers, don't know what's up!

Welcome from San Diego! We need more CA hangers!
