What Can I Make With This?

I just found an old down comforter that I had forgotten about. The only bad thing about it is that the down is poor quality (a lot of feathers). Is there anything I can make with this? Or can I use the down for anything?

You can make anything that uses "down" -it'll just be heavier for the same amount of thermal comfort. Think of it as the prototype test material, if you like the product, you can make another better/lighter one with the "good stuff".

if the shell had no cotton in it, you could make a cheap, simple underquilt buy sewing the perimeters the size you wanted, cutting away the excess, then fold & hem the edges.
it wouldn't be as high quality & as good of "warmth to weight ratio" as if you had hand picked all the materials, but it would probably work fine.

Does the tag give you the ratio or percentage of down to feathers? Slowhike's suggestion is a good one. One member here, andersj, made a quilt from a down/feather pillow that's pretty impressive.

Did he only use one pillow to stuff that entire thing. I couldn't read the page but that's what it looked like.

Is their any chance of me being able to pick the feathers out? It isn't hard to tell when you find one because (as I'm sure all of you know) it has a very "pokey" stem. Just a thought. Might be a waste of time.

I feel like I should clarify. The comforter is a down/feather comforter with box baffles, but the only drawback to it is that the shell is 100% good-ole cotton.

i think you'd give pretty quick trying to separate feathers from down my friend
but if you really wanted to use it, you may could use the vac method jeff talks about on his site to extract the down/feathers from the cotton shell & transfer them to a DIY quilt.
