    Best Knots to Know?

What are the best knots to know for hammock camping?

If you list a knot, could you list a link detailing it and its purpose?

    Thanks!

The ones that come to mind are:

*this list is not complete, and knots appear in no particular order*

    Bowline Knot

    Clove Hitch

    Trucker's Hitch

Prussik Knot/Lark's Head - The lark is the same, with only one loop

    Garda Hitch

    Figure 8 Knot

    Double Fisherman's Knot

    Constrictor Knot

Monkey's Fist Knot - Decorative knot, but good for making pulls

    Unattached Coil - For storage

    Anchor Hitch

    Taut-Line Hitch

    Icicle Hitch

As for when/where to use them...that's up to the situation. Maybe others will chime in and list knots I've forgotten (or don't know!)

That's a long list. I use many of those and one good thing to know with knots is how to make them slippery, or quick release, when you are going to have to untie them after they have served their purpose.

I primarily use a slippery bowline, a multi-wrap finished with 2 half-hitches (the 2nd one slippery), a slippery double sheet bend, and a clove hitch. Sometimes I use taut line hitches, Prusik wraps/knots, a water knot, or a trucker's knot. There is another I use for tying stuff sacks to suspension lines, I think it is called a highwayman's hitch.

You have to be careful of what knots you use where and with what type of rope or webbing. Some knots don't hold well with some materials but hold fine with others. Likewise some knots release well with some materials but you will likely never get them to release with other materials.
