Has anybody tried bungy cords at the head and feet a sleeping bag for an underquilt
Hi, welcome to the forum. If you use the search function you will find many posts about turning a sleeping bag into an UQ. Some people have had great success with it, if I were you I would go ahead and try it out.
my first underquilt was using a Golite synthetic topquilt...it was far better than a thermarest or close cell foam pad inside; but the synthetic didn't compress like down and as soon as the Jacks brought out the Next there was no turning back. But the modded golite kept me warm for quite a while.
It was easy, give it a try. I have a NX-250 and wanted a UQ but need to get some cash first soooo I made one. First off I put my son to work as a hammock hangee so I could get some measurements. I then transposed the measurements to a 20* bag and cut it to a ruff shape. Then I sewed this shape up tight I got some double faced tape at Joanns. After this I trimmed the edges clean. Next I then added two darts one on each side. I drew them out and cut first, taped and then sewed them. The darts along with the taper hold the shape I wanted well. With this done I placed a channel along both sides using 2" poly webbing and added some elastic to the top and bottom hems. Just have to add some shock cord and was done. I was good to the low teens with hi winds to boot. I also made a TQ like the 3 season burrow, love it no pads required. I have pics in the gallery, sort of step by step, sort of.

Make sure it is wide enough. I cut a sleeping in half and it ended up being only 36" wide. You really want a width of at least 40"-52". Trust me those 4" make a huge difference. I just cut one side, sewed it up, ran shock cord through the channels on the ends(most sleeping bags have them), created a loop, and I attached it with a carabiner. Had I made it wide enough I would still be using it.

I am thinking about cutting a whole in the bottom of my bag and installing a draw cor to sinch the foot box then sewing two tabs arround the top of the bag for suspesion and to adjust the air space below me kinf of a pea pod sorta thing think it will work my wife would kill me if she knew I was considering something other than the brand new huba huba that she gave me last christmass but the draw to the trees has been strong for a while. Last June I hung without a pad or underquilt and woke of freezing but not stiff I am looking for a way to try it out without bearing the huge expense If it does not work out
That looks really good and is what I had in mind for a sleeping bag UQ. What was the rating of the bag you used? I have a couple of old 40* that I'm willing to sacrifice....Originally Posted by Busky2
