External Frame and a gear hammock...

did a bit of poking around to see what other might have said about this and found nothing. if i missed a thread please feel free to point it out to me.

a thought occurred to me this week while planing a camping trip with some coworkers and i wanted to get the ideas and opinions of you wonderful people. i have an alice pack that i use for camping and day hikes. i know there are a ton of you out there who use gear hammocks and i have been mulling it over about putting leftover fabric to use. but can i use a gear hammock with an external frame? i have a few things attached to the outside of my pack (buck knife, ifak, sleep system underneath) so the part im concerned about is getting it caught in the fabric or worse, ripping it. im also curious on how it sits. i was going to do another test run this week and thought about bring out the extra hammock and throwing my bag in there but id like to get some ideas from you guys first.

so there it is, do the backpackers with external frames throw their bags in a gear hammock or tie it to the tree? (i know ground is also an option but im looking to keep it up especially if i have the dog with me)

I'm thinking it would be OK. You might want to double the fabric or use a heavier "pack cloth".

I just started playing with the idea of letting my pack be the gear hammock.

Now that makes perfect sense. All you'd need is a little extra cord to tie it up.

I have had similar thoughts, but never pursued it. It just seems that with an external frame pack, there should be a lot of possible re-use.

It would take some kind of quick release system (and quick assembly), but there is just a lot of hardware in the pack.

Some immediate ideas that came to mind.
    • Shell as a gear hammock
    • rails as spreaders for a bridge hammock
    • cross-members as cooking grate over the fire.
    • connector pins as toggles
    • Fill the hollow tubes with drink mix powder
    • etc.

I have a lot of random thoughts during my commute.

I have always just tied my pack to the tree with one of the straps that had been holding my gear to the bottom of the frame. I put it at a height that makes it easy for me to access the pack. Cover it with the pack cover, and it's now waterproof. Never had any problems at all with this.

The only way to find out is to try it. Do you have a pack cover now? Here's what I did.
I was playing around with the idea of a gear hammock last week in anticipation of a trip this past weekend. My idea was to use my pack cover that I already carried along and try that out first. I made up some Whoopies out of 2.2 lash it and it worked like a charm. I really enjoyed being able to access my gear while laying in the hammock. Here are some pics to show my setup. You can see the blue pack cover hanging underneath.

i dont have a pack cover or a gear hammock at the moment. i actually had planned on using my tarp as a pack cover since ill already be carrying it. i figured that with the more rounded shaped of the alice pack it would work better than trying to find one that fits. i could be wrong on that though.

gmcttr, i like the idea of the pack becoming the hammock. the rail system lays flat already and it would just be a matter of stringing it up. especially with the pockets facing upward, all my gear is stored and i know where it is. ill have to try that out! its ideas like that make me love this forum
