Do I need a bigger tarp?

I’m getting ready to purchase a HH ultralight at REI (20% discount on any item).

I would prefer the Hyperlight, but it is not offered by REI.

I’ve been reading that many people have switched the standard HH tarp out for a larger tarp. Also, that HH will sell without the standard tarp. What is the general consensus on the standard HH tarp?

If I’m ultimately going to need a larger tarp, the savings of ordering the ultralight is vastly diminished. That is, the cost of the UL + 2nd tarp would be closer to the cost of the hyperlight – standard tarp + larger tarp.

What would you suggest? Start with the standard UL, and see how it goes, or just go with the larger tarp and the HL?

When I was using a HH I used the stock tarp. It is OK. I spent some nights in some adverse weather conditions and did get minimal spray around the head and around my feet. The stock tarp offers basic coverage only. In my opinion if you're planning on being out in nasty weather I would invest in a larger tarp. I used a Kelty Noahs Tarp that worked well with the HH shape and only carried it if we were expecting rain during the trip.

If you like to lounge around when you make camp, you'll want a bigger tarp.
If you just hit the hay when you make camp, the stock fly will work.

    Get a bigger tarp.

That stock Hennessy tarp's main goal is to reduce the weight of the hammock/tarp package. I'd go with a larger tarp, I'd also get a hyperlite and use the 20% coupon for something else.

He's already given up the "Neo Tarp". It's just a matter of time?

I agree with Cannibal. Also, in my opinion you get better protection with the stock tarp if you attach it to the suspension rope like HH recommends. It may sag a little when you get in, but it stays closer to the hammock that way. Tieing directly to the trees, gives a nice taught pitch, but then when you get in, the hammock pulls away from the tarp potentially leaving you exposed to wind blown rain.

With that said, I eventually got a larger tarp for those low stress trips where there's considerable time lounging around camp, (with a bake-packer, guitar, etc. ) But if its a fast and light trip, then I go back to the stock tarp set.

Or, you could tie one end of the tarp to the tree and leave the other connected to the prusik. This works well for me and I don't have the sag problem. Just another option.

I use the stock tarp exclusively with my HH's and have had great success. I use a MacCat with my other hammocks.

I'm with neo, did start with hh; sucked into the marketing and cheap manufacturing.

How so? From an informed consumer standpoint. Just curious...
