I put this together for a friend. Thought some of you might find it interesting.
Can you tell me, where you all buy 7/64" amsteel for this? :-) (I'm not banned in Google, but maybe some of well-know vendors here are selling it).
Or there are any ready solutions for that (btw: WBBB, Mamajamba)?

I get mine at West Marine. You can also order it from Redden.
And another question for the rest of you. I have found this set up to be perfect except for one thing. Using the whoopie slings I can't get the line quite as taught as I would like. In the end I have to put it about 7' up the tree in order to get the clearance from the ground that I like with the hammock. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
Don't think so that's about the same for me. After hanging the suspension on the straps and tightening I load the main suspension and then retighten the end whoopies. Never measured the height of my tree straps just about as high as I can reach.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.
Did anybody try to use Dutch's whoopie hooks instead of carabiners?
I get my amsteal from http://www.diygearsupply.com/cgi-bin/shelf.cgi?numb=28
Has anyone done more with this excellent system?
I've ordered 30' of Amsteel to make a giant whoopie with an approximate range of adjustment from 13.5 to 21.75 feet. My goal is to span approximately 40' when this system is combined with a strap and buckle system.
This is my hypothesis. The giant whoopie sling can provide a *triple adjustable* SLS, with carabiners the critically convenient links.
This is my experimental protocol. I'll crank tension into the giant whoopie with ratcheted cargo straps that I already possess between trees in my back yard (if the experiment works I'll probably order the strap and buckle accessory from Warbonnet). Carabiners between tree straps and the giant whoopie will be analogous to the alpine loops on Bearchaser's SLS. The adjustable ends of hammock whoopies would then clip onto those carabiners and run to the hammock.
If all goes well then there are three ways to adjust things: 1) different tarp deployments relative to adjustments to giant whoopie length, 2) various distances between trees (using a strap and buckle system), and 3) the way traditional whoopie slings work to preserve the 30* angle relative to both trees and tarp.
Any predictions or suggestions before the Amsteel arrives?
Mike
Mike, sorry, but I'm having a hard time totally understanding what you are doing? What it sounds like is your main line will be a giant whoopie loop, whoopie loop on one end, fixed eye on the other? Then you will have your tarp attached to this giant whoopie. You will attach it to tree straps using biners, then from those biners you will also have whoopies that attach to the hammock. Is that correct?
Anyway you could explain it differently, or sketch something up and post it? Like I said, sorry about not understanding it.
