Interesting. Doesn't make sense to me, I would think that the bug netting is the same length as the ridge line in the middle. Are you sure there is no tension on the bug netting? I understand there would be slack on the edges, but it sounds like you would be stretching it to the length of the hammock in the middle, and I would have expected it to break by then.

From what we learned playing around a few years back the ridge line is a control on how the hammock hangs. I think you will find removing it or changing the length both have noticeable effects on how it lays. That said the minibiner in the line makes sense as long as one is aware of ending up with the same length. OTOH you might find that you can do some fine tuning by playing a bit. You also want to avoid strain on the bug net. If I was doing it I would be very careful loading the hammock with the ridge line removed. If the load transfers to the bottom it's one thing. If the bug net becomes the new ridge line you may have a mess. I really do not know what will happen. Just some things to watch out for.

If I use 1.75mm Zing-It (or Lash-It, I can't remember which it is) to make an adjustable ridgeline , and if I were to use a knot on this line, will the knot derate the line enough I shouldn't use it as a ridgeline for the hammock?

Modifief my ridge line in 2003/2004.

Cut/Unknotted it at the foot end. Tried to turn the HH ULBA so the netting was out of the way.... didn't work. (Now I have it modified by2QZQ btw!)

Tied a piece of white string from a local DIY store on the original ridge line with a double fisherman's knot, thru the original loop at the foot end and made an adjustable taught line hitch (with a half hitch so I could pull it loose....)...

Still going strong after all those years in use!
