Coating your own sil?

Besides Ed Speer's book, (because I don't have it) do you guys know where I could find any info on coating silnylon. This stuff is so impossible to find locally and colors are way limited online.

Just want to see if I think it'd be worth the work. I haven't given up on buying silnylon. Just want to know what my options are.

Are you interested in making Silnylon from nylon? It's done during manufacture; Zero P fabric for zero porosity in skydiving ram air canopies was the impetus, invented by a guy at Performance Designs of Deland, Florida back in the 80's. Dave something...

I started down this path to make some big pieces for a tarp, but after testing with a 1' x 3' piece, punted, because I was daunted by how big a clean space it would take for squeezing, wiping, hanging, etc.

Has anyone done this with a 5' x 10' piece?

i've re-coated a tarp using about a tube of GE silicone caulk and about a 3#coffee can full of mineral spirits. mix and mix and mix and mix (takes forever) until it's dissolved. then, having hung the tarp on my clothesline, i painted it (both sides. probably overkill, as it soaks through) with a 3'' wide foam brush.

Best way I know to mix it is to use a jelly glass and shake it. It takes a lot less time than stirring. I mix it fairly thin, like you probably do since you also use a foam brush.

For mixing silicone and mineral spirits, I have used a small paint stirrer and a power drill with good success.

I use a mason jar and Coleman fuel, I am about to coat Amanda's brown tarp, it will be 1.9, but she won't carry it far. Hopefully all will go well. Thanks for the information.

How big a tube was that and how much weight did it add to the tarp?
