Well, after lurking here on this forum, and doing research for about 2-3 weeks, I finally built my first gathered-end hammock, and rigged it up last night. I'm blown away with how easy this was, and how comfortable the end product is! Here are some pictures...
Me serging away...
Hangs nicely. It's a little long though, almost 12'.
It sure is comfortable!
Tarp is a little wonky, but I plan to make one myself soon.
TONS of room. I can lay in this comfortably with my 3 yr old son and still have plenty of room, with no shoulder squeeze.
I hung it a little high on this first try, once in the hammock I had about 24" from my butt to the ground. I was shooting for more like 18" or so. Chair height, maybe. I rigged it with a 10' piece of 1" webbing using the "wrap" method, and just a water-knot at the end to loop in a AISI rated 1.5" steel ring. The hammock is whipped, looped through a carabiner, and whipped again on the other side, so the end of the hammock forms a loop, I guess. I forgot to take a close-up of my rigging.
All in all, I'm thrilled. I'm camping in it this weekend in Broken Arrow, OK for a kayaking trip with some guys from church. They saw this on Facebook, and now they are all super jealous!
