    Welcome to HF!

For your quilt situation, there are a couple things you can do. You can buy one or make one. Just do a little searching in the forums and you'll find some great info on how to make one. However, if DIY isn't for you, we have some really awesome dealers on here you can get them from too.

Instead of an UQ, you could use a pad and a sleeping bag can be a substitute as well if you have one already.

You have an excellent tarp for rain, so you are ok there. Tip? Take a book. Check with Jacks R Better and Hammock Gear and many others in the forum list of venders.

I think you'll hear from those who have used them about the slap straps and their stretchyness.

Ditch the slap straps they stretch. You'll be on the ground by morning. You've been warned.

Welcome from the north part of wet Washington.

Great place for info. Also, check out a couple of gatherings we got coming up if you want to check out gear and so forth. We are in the stages of arranging a Washington summer hang, and there is an Oregon hang coming up as well.

i hung for two+ years w/o an UQ, they are not mandatory. i just received mine today, i went with synthetic so i would have less moisture worries. read, hang, ponder and be unique-ish.
welcome to HammockForums and hey from high point nc.
there is a ton of stuff here to read, learn and ask about.
if it's hammock related it's here or still waiting to be invented.
    hang on and have fun.

The best tip I can give you for hanging in the rain is just to do it. The best place to learn is in your backyard so you can easily bail if something goes wrong.

Setup the tarp first and take it down last. You should be able to mostly work in the dry for everything else.

Be sure you have good coverage over both ends of the hammock and the tarp is low enough to stop blowing rain.

Put drip lines on the hammock suspension to prevent water from wicking down the lines and into the ends of the hammock.

You can use trekking poles to elevate one edge of the tarp to give you a porch. Pick the side with the best view and arrange your hammock so you can sit in it and look out.

As someone else mentioned, bring a book, sit, and enjoy the hang.
