my Lab retrievers undercoat is a lightweight soft fluffy hair
verses her heavy course top coat
no sure once it is compressed how well it will re-loft

I've caught many a trout on flies I tied with my husky's fur. Not the stuff from the living, breathing dust rhinos behind the door, mind you, but from those perfect little tufts that you can pinch out when she's about to blow her coat. It's free, and a lot less creepy than keeping dead bunny faces, elk hides, and chicken feathers around the house (although I still do that, too).
“Simplicity in all things is the secret of the wilderness and one of its most valuable lessons. I think the matter of simplicity goes further than just food, equipment, and unnecessary gadgets; it goes into the matter of thoughts and objectives as well. When in the wilds, we must not carry our problems with us or the joy is lost.” -Sigurd Olson
And when you're dog hair UQ gets damp you smell like wet dog for the rest of the trip?

My grandma used to keep the fur from her samoed dog(not sure spelling its correct) and send it to be spun. She made a lovely sweater for my granddad.
im kind of not excited about wet dog camping trip haha
I have 3 long haired dogs. They have just been spayed. They are shedding like it is no bodies business. They are in the house. Will see what comes of this.
Secondly, my brain just tripped over an idea. We have geese, and ducks, that spend the winter and year in the lake behind my house. I think it might be time to do some recon! Getting the down for free would be ultra cool. Just don't know how many decades it will take to get enough to do any good.

God created Firemen so cops would have heros.
My understanding is the specific wet fur odor has to do with enzymes on the hair that can be removed.
I imagine that the spinning process compresses the hair so that it has far less dead air space between the hairs. I have no idea if it happens to be hollow hair like possum down, but I never found possum down to be magically warm the way down is.
There's probably a reason you see big parks lined with fur around the hood and not knitted with fur.
