I've got a WBBB - time to think about an UQ

    I'm leaning towards either:
    • 3-season Phoenix - ~16oz, 52"L x 45"W, $189
    • 3/4 length Down UQ by Wilderness Logics - ~20oz, 58"L x 46"W, $175

Both use 2" baffles, so I'm confident that they'll do 25*f without much trouble.

But here's the rub, I like the footbox in the Black Bird and a diagonal lay. So I'm wondering how these longer UQ's are going work with that footbox (I think I know now why Warbonnet went with a much shorter UQ design.) I'm concerned I'm going to have a giant, unsealable gap on the foot end of the quilt the moment I put my feet in the footbox of the Black Bird.

Does anyone here have experience with a WBBB and a longer down UQ (at least longer than the Yeti @46"L x 40"W)?

I can tell you I had no problems what-so-ever with my incubator on my traveler.. Adam makes his products with gathered end hammocks in mind.. sinch up the end and tighten the suspension and you'll get every mile out of it.

Unfortunately I can't speak from experience here, but watching Shug's new Underquilt video at a little after 8 minutes he shows a trick to keep his partial length UQ up tight against him at the foot end. I think that answers your question/concern if I understand correctly!

i use the wbbb w/ a full length uq and i try to hang it asymmetrically (more loose on the footbox side). also just tightening the uq ends will work after some trila & error

I use both an incubator and phoenix and both work wonderfully on my WBBB and traveler. Adam makes a most excellent product. I have not had difficulty with my incubator or phoenix slipping off my foot box.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

I use a LeighLo 3/4 UQ, and, with a small sit pad, I was fine down to 30*. Keeping your feet inside the bottom of the bag, then having the sitpad in the footbox, worked for me. I recently changed to a smaller backpack, so size is now my major considerations

Geo, I found one thing with the 3/4 UQ, and likely a potential, albeit small, issue with them in general. This is something I found out the other day. My UQ would slip off my shoulder, particularly if I moved at night. I solved this problem quite easily. What I did was take 2 pieces of small diameter cord, and made a loop on a small loophole located about 1/4 down from the top end of my UQ (these are sewn in on mine, but sewing a loop on almost any UQ would be a simple task). I then looped those 2 cords over the tieouts for the WBBB. this then prevented it from slipping off my shoulders during the night.
Now, you may not expereince the slippage at all, with your UQ-but, if you do, its a simple fix. Mine took me less than 5 minutes, late at night, in freezing temps-granted, I was motivated to get warm again, but, it was simple. Best of luck with your choice-you wont be disappointed!

That's good to hear - I'm not tiny myself. I like the extra length on the Wilderness Logics UQ.

Did you have to do anything special to get the UQ to seal when you have your feet in the FootBox?
