    Hammock and Tent

    My first purchase of a hammock was the Lawson Blue Ridge Camp Hammock, because it was advertised as both a hammock and a ground tent. Due to in air stability issues, I am looking for another option.After researching for many months, I concluded that most hammocks could be used as bivys if needed, but I am wondering if there is a brand that excels in doubling as a bivy. What are some people's experiences in using their hammocks as ground bivys?

    If waterproof or water resistance is important, then most hammocks will fail as a bivy. For bug protection, only those hammocks with attached netting will work (e.g., Hennessy, Blackbird, etc.). However, for hammocks made from lightweight material (ripstop nylon, Blackbird), I would be hesitant to place the hammock on the ground and lie on it due to concern that the material may snag or tear and potentially rip when hung as a hammock.

    If a bivy is needed when trees are not around, I recommend a real bivy or a lightweight alternative such as a bug-net bivy or tyvek groundcloth placed under your hammock tarp. I just made an 8oz groundcloth partial bivy from lightweight poly-tarp material. If I anticipate areas without hanging options, I'll take this and combine it with my detachable hammock bug net to form a bug bivy under my tarp.

    From Warbonnet site on the BlackBird...

    It can be used as a chair, as well as can be set up on the ground and used as a bug bivy. (note) The fabric is not waterproof/coated because you wouldn’t want a mosquito hammock with a waterproof/coated body. (think buggy, hot, humid) You want as much breathability as possible in these conditions especially. So you’ll want a groundcloth for 2 important reasons if you use the hammock on the ground: one, because the hammock fabric isn’t coated, but it’s also important to protect the hammock fabric from abrasion. Remember, this fabric is holding your bodyweight, so you’ll want to avoid any damage to the fabric. A piece of tyvek makes a good groundcloth
    I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

    The DD Travel Hammock has a second, waterproof layer, so that it can be used as a bivi;

    The Grand Trunk AT Hammock is made exactly with this in mind. I never take it to the ground, but the unique dimensions make it my hammock of choice. It has tie-outs and plenty of coverage to serve as an overhead tarp. I thought the waterproof fabric would make it a sweaty hang in warmer weather, but have never had a problem. In fact, the extra wind resistance makes for a much less chilly hammock in those 60 degree hangs without insulation.

    Worth checking out, maybe.
