need advice: doors or no doors?

I am looking to buy my first tarp. I like the idea of having doors (when its needed). For those times when the doors are not necessary, do you find its a pain to tie the doors back out of the way? I was looking at the zpacks cuben tarp with doors and how the doors are clipped up out of the way in one of the pictures. Do you feel that its easier to have a standard tarp and one with doors, or do you think there is utility in buying just one tarp with doors to cover all bases? I am sure that I will end up with both styles someday... but in the mean time I can only get one. I personally dont think I will need the doors very often, but I dont want to wish I did when the situation comes up. What are your thoughts on a one-tarp-does-all?

I think it depends on how to hike are you a long distant backpacker or car camper or even a short distance hiker < 5 miles. I have both I have a OES Standard no doors for 3 season use minus typoon like weather. winter I have a Superfly with doors attached. I use it for winter and extremely fowel weather. It weights twice that of my standard. and I am getting into lighter weight backpacking. all depends on how you like to do things .

I ordered the tarp with doors from zpacks for my thru hike (a little over ten months away, hurray! Sorry...). In my circumstances purchasing one, sub 7 oz tarp that could handle 100% of my tarp needs on my hike made the most sense. And carrying a minimal coverage CF tarp in the summer would save me 2 oz and leave me soaking wet in any serious summer storm.

It depends on what you need - but it was the clear choice for me!

I have a Warbonnet tarp with an accessory door kit. Had never used doors before that but often wished I had them! These doors assemble and disassemble easily. I would not get a hammock tarp without them now.

My "main" tarp is an OES MacCat Deluxe in SpinnUL (no doors). If the weather forecast is threatening, I may take one or two "Grizz Beaks" (purchased from 2QZQ). Usually one Grizz Beak is usually sufficient to satisfy my paranoia. One Grizz Beak will let me fully seal off one end of the tarp. It takes VERY stormy/windy conditions to get me wet under the MacCat Deluxe even with no doors. It hasn't happened yet, matter of fact, though I must confess that I don't plan weekend backpacking trips if the weather forecast is for seriously crappy weather.

I've observed Pizza's MacCat Deluxe tarp with the 2QZQ door mod. It's a VERY elegant mod, but you will always have the doors with you.

For winter camping, I have a BWDD Winter Dreams silnylon tarp with its big doors. It provides similar coverage to the MacCat Deluxe, though with the fabric difference and the doors there is about a pound of overall weight penalty vs the MacCat Deluxe.

That is why I bought the black mega ogee...... Many many set up options..
Did I happen to mention that I love my ogee?
We would be one step closer to world peace, if everyone slept in a hammock..

I'd really miss doors on my tarp if I didn't have them. All the worrry of windblown rain is removed and gales are kept out. I made them from 0.9oz uncoated parachute ripstop treated with nikwax and they add about 3 oz.

I've also grown to like my doors, especially when the weather's not so good. I bought the Superfly to use as a winter tarp but have stuck with it all year round, I just hang the door cords over the panel pulls if I want them out of the way.
It's nice to be able to lie back and see out but it's also nice to be able to block out a freaky storm or a cold chill.

It is nice to be able to close an end off in a bad wind. Better than moving locale.
Even on just one end is good.

I know I don't worry with my sewn on doors how I orient my tarp to the wind. I am covered on all sides and therefore can find the trees I like and the view I want. Doors allow for a shorter ridgeline length tarp and yet provides better coverage than a longer ridgeline length without doors. Sure, you carry them with you, but for me I hike and camp in any weather, so they make sense for me.
