You "could" rip the 2x4s out but have you?

So I may be moving, and I am thinking of ditching the bed (somewhat) but one of the big reasons I'd be ditching the bed is also the large gain in space I would acquire, so throwing up a stand would be just as detrimental.

So after searching the forums, and reading there is a lot of "Be careful, this or this or this could happen!", but never anything happening.

So here's the question, have you heard of anyone doing actual physical damage to their house by hanging a hammock?

As you probably have read..... lol..... watch where you drill. I hit a 2" water main and trashed my bedroom.
I know what you mean. I read alot about people hanging by the 2x4's and then you will hear don't do it. I had 2 building contractors at work tell me that it would not be a problem. As long as you don't hit a water main. I decided to build a homemade stand to never have to go through that nightmare again.

No damage, but I saw the signs.

My early hammock days had me with a hammock attached to wall studs, hung over my bed. I slept that way for about 2 months, even after the bed went away. I did start to notice the wall 'moving' when I would get in and out of the hammock. Then, the wall started talking. Within a couple of days I built a stand and stopped pushing my luck. Nothing bad happened, but I'm convinced I was only a few hangs away from destruction. Then there's the adult issue of what happens if you have company.

I've been hanging from ceiling joists for the last three years. I never worry about it anymore, which makes sleeping in my hammocks even easier. I suppose you could hang from the walls, but I don't view the reward as enough for the risk.

I was planning on having a sofa bed in there too. I am a single male University student, so I still have to have a bed. As for hanging from the Ceiling Joists, I don't mind. I just don't want the floor space used by a stand.

Yes I have seen damage from less. Danger Will Robinson Danger. I know lots of folks say it's ok but I wouldn't want to do it unless I owned the place and was willing to take the consequences. At the very least get some one from the engineering department to pass judgement. Some of those communal housing facilities took shortcuts they never should have considered.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I have hung a hammock inside before, just to be safe I made decorative plates that I bolted the eyelets to. I made them long enough that they screwed into 2-3 studs.
Nicely cut and router the edges off and they look nice.
Also spreads the load.. I have never had any issues with that method.

mmmm. Now I want a hammock indoors again..

I don't worry about "ripping out 2x4s". A more realistic concern, imo, is doors and windows that no longer close properly.

    walls

Given that you are a college student you could also be facing:

    1. Solid concrete or block walls.

    2. Metal studs.

    3. Old creaky studs under plaster.

None strike me as a good option.

walls are designed to carry loads vertically, not so much laterally.
