we arent confined to state park usage. about 70% of Arizona is public land/forest/blm
do you plan on staying in Phoenix at all? I cant imagine staying in town, as you would be trespassing on someone's land if you tried.. we dont have any parks here in town that would allow you to hang. The great part tho is that you can drive for an hour in any direction and find whatever you need. I have a nice mountain range just 35 miles away that can get me into the 5-6'K range in less than 1 hour.
If you already know the route you plan to drive on your way to SLC, then use hikearizona to map out a hanging itenerary.
another thing: riparian areas hold the best chance of hanging in the desert. Once you leave the valley of the sun you will be heading north into the forests.
here's a neat factoid about AZ: average overall elevation is 4,100 feet.

    here's the site: www.hikearizona.com

Another resource is this site. Do a title search for the name of the place you're interested in and see if any trip reports come up.

Many places have dedicated forums of their own. Linville Gorge's secrets are all online and Gunner runs a forum for the Neusiok trail.

I have never had a problem camping/hanging at any of the NC state parks and or National Forest ect that I have visited. When I stay at a park (State or Fed) that requires me to stay at the developed camp sites I tell the Rangers I am a hammock hanger and they always write down "tent", go figure.

Our fellow hangers in Florida tell us that they are not allowed to hang anything from the trees in the Florida State Parks.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

another 'ploy' (and I use the term advisedly) is to have a small 4x6 pop-up tent to put on the tent pad (use as storage closet perhaps?) so that (gosh! golly!) you have to hang the hammocks in the nearby trees because the pad is taken..
KM (who mostly has gone to group hangs, and so was lost in the crowd when/if the ranger/host came by..)
    Hope that helps!
also if your site has a picnic shelter arrangement, those poles are often quite useful, since they tend to build them in treeless areas to provide shade..just sayin'!

All the federal parks are ok with it so long as you Leave No Trace state parks FLORIDA won't allow too attach or hang anything from the trees.
