If I remember correctly, I first learned how to whip making a handle for a knife. The leather handle finally wore off of the old bayonet that I used to learn how to throw. I had some parachute (550) cord available and somewhere saw how to whip. So I wrapped the knife handle. This way it pulled double-duty. I had a stabbing instrument (it was too dull to cut anything) and cordage.

It seems like there should almost be a forum section on whipping methods, or maybe even a good video tuturial for some of the more popular way of gathering/ whipping. I can't wait I start playing around with some different methods once I get my hands on some decently priced fabric.
