    whipping

I think I might be walking into a situation where I ask a really easy question, but I think I'm just trying to make this harder than it is. What is whipping, why do it, and how do you do it. I am almost certain that it is something really easy that I'm just trying to make out to be hard. Sorry to make someone take the time to tell me, but I just feel like I might be missing something.
    God Bless,

I have used the zip-tie method Jeff lists last on that page and have had no problems with it at all. Very easy. FWIW.

Whipping is what holds the ends of the hammock together and defines it's shape.

I use the zip ties now on all my DIY hammocks, I LOVE it, and it is very easy to readjust, just clip it off, and add a new one.

Whipping methods are a great way to pass the time and play with different ways the hammock lays. You can put in 'knee-bumps', make a flay lay, or any number of different combinations on each end. I'm tellin ya, you could kill a weekend easy.

The zip ties do make it a breeze!

I was kind of wondering about that. The page says testing will be done, but no results are given. I figured nothing bad had happened, since there was no mention.
I've already got some line that I can use for whipping, so I think I'll go for that. However, when it runs out, it'll be time for me to try out the zip ties.

Knee bumps , flay lay? I've done the pull out the ends step and played with different lengths of that, but "knee-bumps"?

Use an offset "W" whipping at the foot end. It creates a 'bump' that comes up under your knees. It takes a few attempts to nail it, but what a feeling when you do!

That should have been "flat lay" (standard whipping on same page linked) not "flay lay".

Even if you use zip ties to build your hammock it is a good idea to know how to whip. If you have a zip tie failure during a hike you can make repairs with any 'ol cord you have on hand (if you forget to pack extra zip ties) thereby eliminating the need to sleep on the ground! Plus whiping is good for other stuff as well, to keep the end of a rope from fraying, to lash something to the end of a pole, or around something else (like a broken knife handle) for extra comfort and grip.
