Have lurked for a while, Just now registered.
Ive slept in hammocks before, but this will be my first year camping in one.
So much info on here its hard to find answers sometimes.

If anyone can tell me or link me to the right post it would be grand
How cold does it have to get before I need more than a sleeping pad under me?
I'm planning on a 4 day trip to Bull of the woods in June.

Hello and welcome!
Unlike the ground, a hammock wraps part way around your shoulders so the standard 20 inch ground pad is often a little narrow for hammock use. You may want to go a little wider or supplement your existing pad out to about 30-40 inches wide, depending on how big you are. As to temps- a pad should be good to 30 degrees I should think. YMMV.

After all the methods I have seen, a lot pack bulky or cost a large amount to stay warm.
Ive slept in my backyard in a hammock and just tossed on my heavy fleece and snow board pants and stayed pretty warm on a chilly night.
I am not sure how cold it was though.. I'm debating trying it out with a good base layer and some Omni Heat products from Columbia sportswear..
I''m not really a fan of using a pad even, rarely do when tent camping.

If it works, then getting up to take care of business would be nice and warm.
Just trying to figure out my options.

in my climate controlled home - i use a summer rated underquilt.
i've gotten a chill at 65 degrees. of course thats not a threatening temp,
but its annoying to get woken up with a cold butt. i think i run a little cold though.

a lot of good info on here. keep it simple though. we like to collect and mod gear
like jeff beck collects and wangs out guitars.

i'm not familiar with bull of the woods, but i'd at least have a torso pad / space blanket to toss beneath you in case the temps prove too cold.

I'm not a fan of a pad either, but if it is all you have then it is what you use. Temps below 65-70 usually require some kind of insulation as rip_waverly notes. A "good base layer and some Omni Heat products" may work for mild temps, but I suspect if you get down to the 40s and 50's, which could happen in Bull of the Woods in the summer, you will be cold or at least uncomfortable. Omni Heat products seems to be aimed at active sports, probably most of which you will not be participating in while in the hammock. Omni Heat technology is subject to the same laws of physics that other insulation is (in spite of the hype by Columbia) and compression, as in laying on it in hammock, will likely decrease its insulation value. I would definitely try it out near home. YMMV

Yeah plan to pick a nice night and crash out on my normal hammock and see. Im curious cause I have taken a nap against a tree in the snow wearing nothing but my Snowboard pants and fleece and been good.
