i can't speak for x- but it all depends on your needs.
expected weather, seasons used, material desired / weight, etc.

i'd love me a standard- its like the medium vanilla cone of the ice cream world.
just enough to not disappoint, but may have you wishing you went
    with a hot fudge sundae.

Rip said it right, its a little more than just enough. I consider the standard and delux both 3 season tarps so I went with the smaller one. I've never sat out any real bad storms with it, but plenty of people have. I will say wind blown rain could be an issue through its steep cat cut from the ridge line to the edge. The 7' widrh is perfect for me but you really have to pitch it right in that situation.

The standard works fine more me excluding winter and those tough spring storms but I feel the delux might be the same but give you just a tad bit more room for cooking and such. Anyone else feel free to chime in please.

I have a Deluxe and have sat through a pretty heavy sideways thunderstorm. I just got a bit of misty coming from the ridge line and my gathered ends got a tiny bit wet. But It was also only the second time I set my tarp up and I don't think I set it close enough to the hammock. So I think I could sit out a sideways thunderstorm completely dry if set up right.
If you don't try due to fear of failure you've already failed due to fear.

That's good to hear spacecadit. Ill have to throw up the standard in the back yard next time it gets real nasty. I've only sat through lighter wind blown rain and it got a little misty. Sometimes I feel light rain may be worse because its easier blown. I've also only set mine up maybe 8 times or so, so I am no expert.

I also must say through my experience with all manufactures, brian has been one of the best. Wonderful customer service and his tarps are built top notch. The .5-1oz more for them being "over built" is worth it in my eyes to have a nice long lasting tarp that will ensure plenty of years of a tight pitch.
