    Opinion of Net Hammocks?

Just curious what your opinions are on net hammocks?

Thinking of tying one from #100 tarred twisted nylon (bankline). I stared out hammock camping in a cheapo net hammock. Strangely I never got cold in it with only a sleeping bag. Of course that was when I was 15 and about half as heavy.

Even after learning about suspensions, sag, etc, I couldn't get comfortable in one. One problem, but not the only one, is that nylon s t r e t c h e s.

There are net hammocks and then there are net hammocks. I assume what you're talking about is one of the ones with fairly open pattern of strings, and probably knotted intersections. Mayan hammocks are also essentially net hammocks, but they have a tighter woven pattern and (I think) no knots. It's been a while since I lounged in a Mayan hammock, but it was very very comfortable. I had the other kind when I was a kid, and it was okay for lounging and reading or napping during the day, but only tried to sleep through the night in it once. That didn't work so well. . . I froze my bum off and got eaten alive by mosquitoes.

Interesting observation about not getting cold in yours as a kid. I wonder if the open netting allowed the sleeping bag to poke through enough to retain some loft and insulating ability underneath you.

When I was young I used to camp in one from summer to mid fall; worked fine with all clothes on, gloves, a jacket, and a beanie. 'Twas better than sleeping on the ground! But it does not compare to sleeping in a real hammock with quilts IMHO.
