Temperature to NOT bring your UQ with you

I think I was in death valley yesterday.
temps said it felt like 101 degrees

Well tonight in DV you would want that UQ & TQ. 77 degrees right now and forcasted to be 68 tonight...trees rare as an honest polititian though.

I would be cold! being out in the heat like I have been the past couple of weeks anything under 90 starts feeling cool to me.

For me - no matter what my UQ comes with me - also brought a hammock sock out in the field yesterday - more than likely that would have worked well

I used to use the super large Ziploc bags for pack liners, but have pretty much stopped doing that too.
I just don't take any risks when it comes to weather. As soon as I think it might rain, the pack-cover goes on. Luckily, my ULA will shed a little bit of water if I'm too slow on the draw. I haven't had any problems/issues yet, but I know it's my responsibility to get my pack covered quickly if need be.

even at the top of the mntns but standing in a parking lot for a few hrs in uniform felt like more than 101. if I stayed over night (hammock gear was with me) my sleeping spot for the night was going to be a creek

What is that, a dang freak cold spell? Heck, it has been right at 100- plus plenty of humidity, here in north MS!

As for an UQ or pad, what temp do you need at least a tiny bit of insulation on top? Whatever that is(65/70/75?), maybe add 5 or max 10 from that. If lows are guaranteed above that, then just go natural(sans UQ)! Assuming you can stay out of the wind and wet!

If there is a chance it will be colder than that temp, take something for the bottom.

But will you always have some sort of pad with you anyway? For being forced to ground or for sitting around the camp fire? If so, that (and maybe your pack) can always be put to emergency use if you find you are too cold to sleep.

+1? Bring under-quilt and late fall / early spring clothing. Post a 25 degree drop on a 55 degree day after a front I never put on all my clothing.

this is one time I can say I am not bringing my UQ
I have a DIY hammock sock I made that has pockets where I have 1 layer of PE foam in the pockets (1st time to test in field)

also only taking a DIY summer down TQ

Its been lows of 61-65 the past few nights and high's around 93-95
so I'm thinking this setup will work
almost harder to figure out then when its freezing

I sleep very warm and live in south MS, but I still dont think I ever leave my underquilt at home! That being said, I have slept many nights and will sleep many more without using my underquilt, but I always want one there just in case! As has already been mentioned if a thunderstorm blows through, they can push a cold front and drop quite a few degrees! being cold and trying to sleep is no fun! So my opinion is always have, just not always use it!

I just experienced two nights, on successive weekends, that were on the cusp. One w/o an uq, one with. I'm a believer, but don't want to haul a 30* quilt around in the middle of summer, so I checked with Paul...said I wanted a summer quilt...no problem, a 1s KAQ is in the works. A little bit of nothin'.

Well hopefully that sock will be enough for you. But if you are like most folks, you will for sure need something for 65F lows, especially if there is any wind at all.
