    New tarp....

I needed a new tarp and due to extreme laziness didn't want to make my own so I looked around and settled on having Papa Smurf make me one. I chose to use a new material sold over at thru-hiker.com called "Shield". It's supposed to be made so that your tarp will not mist like a lot of the silnylon ones will.

It measures about 133" by 87" and weighs 6.55 ounces. It is a minimal protection type tarp for fair weather. I strung it up in the backyard real quick just to see how she flys. Like most tarps of this type it is very hard to get a tight ridgeline. The workmanship is top notch. This was my first time dealing with Papa Smurf and I have to say it was a most pleasant experience. Thanks PS!

    Here's some pics:

Thanks guys! Here's a few pictures with a ridgeline under the tarp. I don't have an ideal hanging situation here so can't vary the height of the hammock and tarp. Normally the tarp would be lower to cover the end of the hammock more. I could also use some hammock socks on the ends if rain were expected.

I would have to agree, he's great. That is the thing about cottage guys for me... Big names may make it cheaper, or in rare cases better, but it's the customization and customer service that keeps me buying from these guys. If a cottage company has bad customer service they are shooting themselves in the foot. Papa responded to my email from, or immediately following, trail days.

The thing I really liked is that I could choose to have it made anyway I wanted. I got to pick the material, the color, corner patches, and edge binding. It was essentially a custom tarp at off the shelf prices. That's the way I did it when I had KAQ. You could buy the quilts as designed or I would custom make one for no or little extra cost.
