    kevlar rope

So i told a buddy of mine who is looking into getting a ENO doublenest not to get the slapstraps because of the stretch issues. Since then he's been looking into making a suspension from kevlar rope. has anybody had any experience with this? does kevlar rope stretch? i'm not familiar with it, but i'd hate for him to buy a spool and find out that it stretches like the slapstraps after the fact.

    thanks for your help

the kevlar rope i just looked at(1/8") has a 466lb rating and and is 62cents a foot... 7/64 amsteel from arrowhead http://arrowheadequipment.webs.com/a...s/show/1076490 has a 1400lb rating and is $5.50 for 25ft. In 25 feet, you save $10 going with the amsteel and we know that that works. It's a no brainer.

I haven't seen pure Kevlar rope in in the sailing world. I've seen lots of of Kevlar covered rope. I've seen kevlar webbing. Strength is similar to polyester if I recall per width, just a little lighter. The benefit of Aramid fibers like Kevlar is resistance to chafe and abrasion, not strength to weight ratio.

I never weighed kevlar, but I always thought it was heavy compared to amsteel. Like I said I never weighed it so take it with a grain of salt.

Amsteel has been so tested out here.

Kevlar weakens when flexed, not a great property for our use. It would need replacing much sooner.

Not only does it weaken, but it breaks easily when flexed and works better in sheets than in rope.

another thing about kevlar, is that it can cut through other materials and ropes. In fact, I know for a fact that a piece of kevlar thread can cut through plasti-cuffs.

Pretty much everything is Spectran isn't it? Isn't that what "Amsteel" is? Fishing line, bow strings, and climbing rope - all Spectran.

Visit a strong seller of kite components. You may find kevlar line. And you may find a note that other kite fliers will not look kindly on you for using it.
