Sorry, kind of misleading (even for hangers). I recently had $10 the Missus didn't know about, so when I drove by West Marine I thought "Hmmm, I wonder if they have Amsteel?" they didn't, but they ordered it, and last night found me the proud owner of a 30ft coil of black 7/64.
24 hours and 2 slings later I set a new land speed record to get home from work to try them out. I used a modified sheet bend because it has served me well in the past, and I figured it would be easier to fine tune my new diy gathered end. I like my hammocks long, and even though I knew Amsteel is slickery stuff, I cheated on how much material I was willing to dedicate to the knot (you can probably see where this is going). So after playing around with the lie a bit, I finally settled back to do some serious slacking, and then... Whump! I wasn't all that high up, but man, a 0-60 fall in 2 feet's time makes it's presence known
. Wish the story ended there.
So I regather the foot end (generously this time), and get back on that horse. After some mini-bounces, some fidgeting, adjustment or two to the ridgeline, I am finally comfortable and able to ponder some of life's greater mysteries. In this state of mind I asked myself, "I wonder if I should have checked the head end as well?"... Whump!
I have frequently read posts reminding hangers not to hang any higher than they are willing to fall, and (I'm ashamed to say this) I have caught myself thinking "anyone with half a brain and a bit of common sense should be able to avoid that." I'm probably right.
But because I have less than half a brain and no common sense, I plan on erring on the side of caution in the future.
