    Footbox Dimensions

Are the dimensions of the footbox triangle proportionate to the hammock width? It seems to me that the bottom point (90*) of the triangle should be
where the flat lay of your hammock is.
Also can I go with other than a right triangle? if i go with a greater angle than 90* I can keep the 2 sides of the hammock equal length.

You can't put in a footbox without shortening the side... (if one side is the same length as the other two combined, the triangle is now a flat strip of material...

But you CAN put something in other than a right-triangle. If you open up that angle some, it will reduce how much you shorten the side... I have found (on 3 hammocks) that the footbox doesn't need to be really big, and unless you're putting a bugnet on it, the only thing the footbox does is keep your feet (and TQ) from falling out of a floppy edge of the hammock...

(I have a footbox on my netless hammock just for that purpose!)

So a footbox is just a big triangle added to one side where your feet go? That helps get a flatter sleep? How big a triangle piece do you need?

I've been struggling with the footbox and side on my blackbird clone. I recently took that side off because it was IMO too high and tight. I had a 31" x 31" x 45" triangle with a side connector and shelf. It was a right triangle, and I'm thinking about doing more of an isosceles triangle so that maybe that side isn't so tight. I'm not sure of the impact it will have on the actual footbox. I would love to know the actual dimensions of the blackbird side since I don't have one (yet) - it seems more of an hourglass shape that looks to me like the footbox corner may be greater than 90 degrees...

A real blackbird is in my future - mainly because in trying to make one, I now fully realize the genius and complexity of the design.

Agreed. I'm working on a netless version right now and cant seem to make the economics work out for one with a bug net.
Your triangle reduces the foot box side by 17". If you add 17" to that side when cutting your body you should end up with 2 sides of equal length after sewing in your triangle? that seems to work...at least in my feeble mind.

Yes - I think you're on to it - the only way to make the side with the triangle on it the same "length" as the other side - and in turn as loose, is to actually make that side longer - almost like a reverse asym. The bug net would take up the slack, but at least there wouldn't be a huge wall of fabric on one side - as mine turned out.

Either that, or put a "head-box" on the other side.

I haven't heard that Brandon actually does that on his design - the footbox side on his design seems somewhat tighter and a little higher (at least from pictures I've seen), but in his design, it just seems to all work out.

It may be some sort of magic, I'm not sure...

I've been working on some small 2ft long mock ups to see what happens. there is some extra fabric below the edge of the foot box side but not sure how that will affect the lay. i wish some of the experts would chime in

Would love to see the results of your mock ups when they're done!
