The small knotbones are pretty short. Did you have the knotbone and not the knot bearing the load? Or is the compressive strength of the thing so minimal that it was crushed and broke apart?

My interest in this, as OP, is not to find ways, of which there are several, in which the knotbone can fail, but to understand whether, when it is used as a cleat or toggle around which constricting lines are wrapped, it may be safe and useful at much more than its rating.

I'm not trying to find a use for the things; I'm wondering whether they can spare me or someone else a lot of trouble in untying knots. Just now, I'm wishing that either a tree strap had been longer or that I had not tied a continuous Dynaglide loop with a larks head to it as I did.

    Exactly THAT.

It just sheared it right in half. Like I said before, it was used as a toggle, and we both knew it was likely going to break. Painful to be right.
The knot bone is not meant to hold weight at all, so we knew we were using it for its unintended purpose... No lectures please, my hip is still talking.

It works really well.

This is the same set-up I use, except I don't have the figure 9 on a prussic, as the way the 9 is made it can slide up and down the length to reposition as needed.

I just use the Knotbone at one end.

Not lecturing. Trying to learn the failure mode. If used as a toggle and it was crushed, then it has no compressive strength. If weight was on the ends and it broke or if weight was on the ears and they broke, then it lacks tensile strength.
Lots of rocks and concrete has terrific compressive strength, but no tensile strength. Find a concrete rod at your camp sight, and, if it was in good shape, it would make a fine, heavy toggle.
