KnotBone ratings way conservative?

Does someone with these have an informed opinion of the basis for the very conservative ratings? I wonder if those are pretty much a function of the cheap and weak rope supplied with them as an option, and for the weakest link and use, hanging from the hook part.

If the grooves and channels are just used to help keep knots from deforming, to maximize consrtiction under tension, I'd guess that the compressive strength is sufficient to allow their use up to a good fraction of the strength of Amsteel, and be a part of the main suspension.

But, I'm not an engineer. Or a lawyer, either.

I'd be interested to see it attempted. Intuitively I don't think they are strong enough for any kind of weight bearing. Amsteel's slickness may allow it to slide right out of a knotbone given enough tension.

I read recently where a hanger's amsteel loop made with double fisherman's knots slid open. Granted he had used it for a while and the sliding probably took while but the amsteel was tensioned on itself. In a knotbone, the amsteel would be tensioned around the knotbone and there may not be enough friction to hold it. I could be way off so I hope someone tests the weight capacity of these convenient little dohickeys.

If you decide to try using a knotbone with Amsteel as a hammock suspension, do place some padding under your hammock and be sure to set up your video camera to capture the moment.

I'd rather not trust a piece of plastic to hold up my hammock. I use a knotbone in my continuous tarp ridge line and that works great.

+1 on the Knotbone for a tarp ridgeline. I would not trust it for load bearing in a suspension. They are plastic and have a hollow channel through the middle and I would not be surprised to see amsteel cut into the plastic or crush the channel. If the rope cut into the plastic it could form an edge which in turn might abrade the rope...

Really? I tried them with my tarp and found them to be painfully slow compared to my Figure 9s. Maybe it's just me. I find the 9s much easier to adjust.

I use the knot bone in a whoopieslings.com style continuous ridge line. Knot bone on one end to wrap around 1 tree. 2 prussic loops to attach to the tarp to and a 3rd prussic loop with a figure 9 attached to provide adjustment and mechanical advantage to tension the ridge line tight while wrapped around the other tree. It works really well.

Witnesses at Trail Days (including the Hennessy guys across from our booth) can attest to our knot bone "accident". We had a hammock rigged up on a stand, and couldn't find a toggle for the whoopie slings. We figured it would work to grab a knot bone from our accessory table. It was a little precarious with me swinging in it.......Until Stormcrow decided to join me. My hip still hurts.

I saved the broken knot bone as a memento!
