Help needed: road trip from NY via Boston into Maine and back

Good morning, dear fellow New England hangers, I'd like to ask for your help:

My family and I will be flying from Europe to NY in mid July to go on a camper roadtrip during the second half of July. Rough outline is from NY to Boston in a regular car, rent a camper there and then follow the coast up north (possibly into CAN?) and come back inland to fly out of Boston again.

Now: Where should we go? Which route to take ? Which tourist trap should we avoid falling into and which places are a must-see? Some parks along the route would be nice, I'll be taking my WBBB after all .

So, I'd really appreciate it if you local folks can help me with the planning or give me any ideas. Thanks a lot in advance!

    All the best, saupacker

    Saupacker,
I'm more of a NH person - but I've seen a little of Maine.

I would say that Acadia is a must see. It can be very busy (will be in mid-July), but its a very nice place. There is camping in the park and just outside. I've been twice. The first time all rain and fog, so we couldn't see much at all. The second time we had some nicer weather and the combination of small mountains and ocean was especially nice. The hiking trails were nice ands are great for families - interesting, but not too long.

Unless you like outlet shopping avoid Freeport. Back when only the original LLBeans was there it was a great place to visit. Now its a shoppers paradise.

I would recommend a visit to Baxter State Park (Mt Katahdin area) if you are all into hiking (rafting/canoeing). this is a relatively undeveloped park in the north of Maine. If you are headed for Canada it might be out of the way, but its different than your run-of-the-mill park. Again, this can be crowded.

I don't have local knowledge and will keep an eye in this post to see what suggestions you get.

If you decide to look around NH I could get you more info.

before you do any planning for the canadian leg of your journey- makes sure you can take the camper across the border...most car rentals forbid this..maybe the rv rentals ar more lenient..then again, maybe not!
