Summer TQ - Lafuma Sleeping Bag Mod

So I saw the recent thread about the Lafuma X800 sleeping bag on sale at REI for $39 w/ free shipping for members. http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=33207
I bought one and it arrived yesterday. Upon receipt I weighed the bag & stuff sack and it came in at 27.7 oz. I then started cutting and stitching and 2 hours later I have a 20.9 oz true summer top quilt.

Basically I removed the zippers, hood and drawstring. Before cutting I sewed a stitch line on the good side of the intended cut line to keep the layers and insulation together. Then I just cut next to the stitch line removing the unwanted parts. I then trimmed all cut edges with DIY bias tape and reinforced the junction at the closed footbox w/ 1 1/2" wide grosgrain. All in all pretty easy mod to save 7 oz and make the sleeping bag more convenient to use.

I was thinking about doing similar so I am stoked I ran across this post.
Does it make sense to buy two so I could have one for summer and then layer the two for 30ish degree nights? Would come in below 3lbs and still be pretty compact.
I was thinking that I could just add some snips to attach the two together.

I think for colder weather 2 of the mod. sleeping bags would make for a shorter than ideal TQ. In the colder weather I still use my Marmot Sawtooth 15* down bag spread open over me like a TQ but have not modified it. Not sure how the two layers would do...

With this bag modified & the hood removed it comes up to my chin w/ my feet fully in the footbox and the TQ not stretched tight.

If the bag is long enough (you are short enuf?), then you can do this. I used my TNF Beeline mod (much like this mod here), with a warm weather synthetic quilt over the top down to 15 degrees last winter. ( a 30 degree quilt with a 50(?) degree over the top). It worked well. I didn't do anything to connect them, the nestled footboxes worked well enough.

The height rating is not accurate for use as a mummy sleepingbag as I am 6'2" and it was just about right for me as a sleeping bag.

As a tq, you could do it easily as described with layering two tqs I think as it is still a pretty tall tq.

They cycle in relatively regularly. Keep the eyes peeled.
