    tree huggers - no loops?

Just got given some tree huggers straps as part of a new hammock bundle but the have no loops sewn in. Is their any reason I can't just marlin spike to the doubled up ends?

ie. tie the marlin spike hitch using both free ends together having wrapped the webbing around the tree once or twice.

It seems blindingly obvious to me now - and requires no d-rings, clips, elephant trunks, mailons, snap rings or sewing.

Does anyone know if this will/won't work? And if it will then why isn't everyone doing it?

    Cheers

    Mike

That will work fine. Some folks do use marlinspike hitches, especially with whoopie slings.

Others like to use hardware, depending on the type of suspension arrangement they prefer.

    It's just personal preference.

Cool - couldn't see a reason why it wouldn't. Oh so simple.

if your huggers are long enough then it works fine. The issue comes if it is not long enough...with a loop, the whoopie, UCR, chainlink, etc. can go through the loop to a marlin spike hitch on the hugger where ever it is on the tree.

So the downside is that you have to carry longer huggers than you would with a single loop, and the webbing weighs more than amsteel. If the few oz is not an issue then it is not a problem.

I think long huggers will still weigh less than the 2 maillons I was using.

That's exactly what I do. I use the cheap harbor freight straps (which are pretty light). They are twelve feet long, so I fold them in half, bring the bight around the tree, put the two loose ends through, and cinch it tight. Then the MSH. This also gives me the added benefit of doubling up those admittedly wimpy huggers

    Does the trick for me.
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

Interesting. I meant tying the hitch using both loose ends as if they were a single strap rather that doubling over it should still be as strong but give more webbing to play with?

Someone started a thread about that a while back. I tried it and it works well.
Another no loop option are triglides from Jacks R Better.

With heavier straps, for instance polyester from Strapworks, you'd have a bigger MSH, so you might want to use a longer toggle and perhaps have a slider on your whopie loop to keep it from slipping off one side if the knot makes the toggle angled (not perpendiculare to the strap & whoopie). This is another reason why the yellow Harbor Freight straps are a good choice.
