In short, you're pack will be heavier and fuller using 550. If you're not a gram weenie, the weight may not be much of an issue, but a 550 quilt sure will fill up a pack.
gram weenie. That made me laugh. I'm not super concerned about weight but volume is something I would like to reduce. The synthetic insulation sleeping bag I use now doesn't compress much at all.

On a side note how would one go about comparing the insulation given by the 800 FP pillow down vs say the hammock gear down. I wouldn't mind comparing them in a quantitative manner if we could come up with an idea for an experiment that would show how much of a difference there was in insulation. Not just this one feels warmer but an actual thermal insulation measurement.

Here is what I was thinking. If you made a box that was missing one side and then put a thermometer inside and sealed the open side with a sample of the down sealed in a ripstop bag. Then if you put a constant heat source aimed at it you should be able to tell how much heat is allowed to pass through the material. The lower the number the better the insulation.

Please give me any ideas you guys have and if anyone wants to donate enough down to fill a 5 inch square test sample let me know.

whats the link to this pillow...

think about this... if it was filled with nothing but 800 fill... why would they be selling it so cheap ?
just something to think about... and if it's the same pillow i think it is it's not true 800 fill... i know it came up befor and someone made a UQ out of it...
you could always get one of the pillows... and get an oz of HG down..
you will see the difference i'm sure
i will add that i have a down pillow and on the tag it states it's 550 fill.. when i cracked it open there was more feathers then anything ..
alot of the difference will come on how clean the down is... i bet that pillow has alot of feathers
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold
