Got a new aluminum pole with a pre-bent center connector. Lost 4 ozs and with the bend in the center more pole is in contact with the tarp, so it holds up better.

This is a very easy mod, and I am very very happy with the results.

Kinda over my head on that one. Its the center pole of my Eureka Alpenlite tent. I will take a closer picture of the pole for you when I get home and set it up.

Here are a few pictures. One is of the pocket sewn on the tarp. The other is the center bend of the pole and how it attaches to the ridgeline.

The next thing I am doing is to sew loops on the bottom of the pockets so that they can be staked down. Then place one stake under the hammock and guyline both loops to the stake. That will stabilize the poles in high winds.

Whats happening in high winds is that the side getting hit pushes down and the side not in the wind gets pushed up and away by the pole. By securing the pole to the ground and not allowing the opposite side to push up and out, the side in the wind will remain firm. See diagram....

Looking at it, it seems to me to be something in the 145° ARCH range maybe?

Great work on the pole mod! I want to do this to my MacCat Ultra which has a middle guyline attachment on each side.

I'm wondering if you would get even more room if you pitched the tarp a bit limp at first, then rigged up the pole mod such that it was snug to the tarp in the center (at the ridgeline), and finally tightened up the tarp pitch as per normal. Inquiring minds want to know

Trial and error here. The stake idea was a bust, but this is what came of it. The perfect solution!!!

Use your hiking poles as supports under the pole pockets. They hook in the loops placed there for a guyline. This makes the pole ends ridged.
